2010

It’s a busy weekend to say the least, last night we had the opening reception for the collective works of the InkSpots.  This is a group of  printmakers I belong to in Ventura.  This is the second year that the printmakers have created a folio.   Eight of the members created their own edition of 10 prints that are part of the 10 porfolios for sale.  Eight original pieces of work all ready for framing or to be kept in a beautiful acid free box.  You can contact Galley 255 for additional information.

We had a great turnout. The show will be on for the rest of the month until the 25th. Hope to see you there.

Channing Peake Gallery

I was thrilled to be juried into the Santa Barbara Printmaker’s Show at the Channing Peake Gallery in Santa Barbara. The juror was Tim Schiffer, the Executive Director of the Ventura County Museum. I had to send him a thank you note for including me in this comprehensive and varied exhibit showcasing so many incredibly gifted printmakers, it was truly an honor.

Santa Barbara has First Thursday, when the galleries are open late and often times the artists are present. As an artist, I am always happy to be able to meet with other like minded individuals and hear about their work and their process. This last Thursday, six of us were able to bring our portfolios to the gallery and meet with the gallery visitors.

It was a wonderful experience. My Buddha etchings still hold a great deal of interest. Last year my “Peace in Pink” Buddha monotype sold at The Buddha Abides Show at the Frameworks Gallery in Santa Barbara to a woman who has a twin. I found out her twin also wanted one, but as the print was an original and one of one, she had to pick another piece. As I was sitting at my table with my portfolio a woman walked up to me and said “I have your Buddha etching”. It was the other twin! I was thrilled to meet her and visit. Enjoy your Buddha etching Jennifer!

New series of work

Must admit, I’ve been a tad busy as of late and have ignored my blog, sorry people! Anyway, I took and incredible workshop with Pamela Drix from Ithica, New York, a couple of months ago and it got me off into another land of printmaking. It still amazes me all the different ways of doing printmaking. This is a lithographic transfer process where you have to print in different colors on top of each other, so registration is an issue. It gets a little complicated and you don’t really know what you’re gonna get in the end. Well at least I don’t. But I did want to share a couple of images I’ve done so far. I’ll be working some more this weekend as I have an upcoming show at Gallery 855 in Ventura with the Inkspots, a printmaking group I belong to. I’ll keep you posted.

This is the 10th year that Lark Batteau along with Christi Westerhouse at the Frameworks Gallery in Santa  Barbara have put on this incredible and varied exhibit.  AND it’s for a good cause as well as 20% of the profits are donated to the Santa Barbara Domestic Violence Solutions and the Tibetan Children’s Village. My daughter and I made the trek to San Louis Obispo for the opening of the Legends Show. It had quite the turnout. Wow there are a lot of people interested in art up there. Great to see.  Also met Nick Spohrer, the juror of the show and his lovely wife Maida, who actually took the photo of us.  Nick had a show of his own going on at the SLO Art Center simultaneously. Loved his work so fun and playful.  It was great visiting with them.

Legends Show in San Louis Obispo

Took some time off from printmaking and the holidays sort of came in between.                                       However, I’m back at it now.
Just found out that I was juried into the “Legends” show at the San Louis Obispo Art Center www.sloartcenter.org. A state wide juried show of contemporary printmaking in California.  The piece that was chosen was actually a collaboration with my daughter Mika. We were sitting around one afternoon mesmerized by the shadows on the dining room wall as the afternoon sun came in through the window. She grabbed her camera and shot away. I loved the image and made an etching on a copper plate. I then hand inked it and hand printed it on water color paper on my etching press, and voila our collaboration.

The show runs March 5 – April 18

Angel Contest

January 21st, 2010 – 10:48 pm
Filed as: Shows

Thanks to my wonderful sister Liz, I entered an online angel contest  through OnAngelsMagazine.com I was fortunate to win second prize for my light painting of Mandolin Angel.  I have long had a fascination with angels both here and beyond and feel them all around me. I had this vision of an angel quietly strumming a mandolin. Well it took me forever to find a mandolin, this one’s an oldie. I had been looking for a model with long red hair for quite awhile as well.  Lo and behold I found this beautiful girl in the market one night as I ran in to get some bananas for my morning shake. I hesitated in approaching her, but I knew I would never forgive myself if I didn’t talk to her.  She was most gracious and we spent two days together shooting. Oh and I made 5 different sets of wings including this one.  That was quite a job, feathers everywhere!

Cirque du Soleil is coming to town. I was down by the Santa Monica pier early Thursday morning, the sun was peeking out and illuminating the famous archway to the pier, it looked like it was bathed in gold.

Down on the parking lot below the pier, the trucks had started lining up their containers and a couple of the smaller tents had been put up,
